PHOTOGRAPHY GETAWAY

Wolf, bear and red deer rut

in Montaña de Riaño and Somiedo

Summary

This getaway brings together three of the most exciting experiences a nature photographer can have in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. During the trip, we will visit some of the best spots for observing the iberian wolf and the cantabrian brown bear, two iconic species whose sightings in the wild are among the greatest attractions of European wildlife.

As autumn sets in, we will also be able to enjoy the red deer rut, a natural spectacle in which the males compete for control of their harems through impressive bellowing and displays of strength. An experience that combines photography, nature and excitement against a backdrop of stunning scenery, always with the utmost respect for wildlife and its habitats.

Recommendations

For this trip, we recommend using a telephoto lens of between 400 and 600 mm, or an equivalent zoom lens (100–500 mm, 150–600 mm or 200–600 mm), which is ideal for photographing wild mammals whilst always maintaining a respectful distance.

It is also advisable to bring a second camera body with a shorter focal length lens for landscape and environmental photography, as well as spare batteries, plenty of memory cards and a tripod or monopod. As many of the observations take place at dawn and dusk, a camera that performs well in low-light conditions is particularly recommended.

The excursions will take place in natural mountain environments during the autumn, so it is recommended that you bring warm technical clothing, dress in layers and have a waterproof jacket and a windbreaker.
