An old, abandoned shepherds’ sheepfold where flocks of sheep were once kept. Acquired by the Esparvel Conservation Group, it has since been used for the breeding of Lesser Kestrels. Today there is a significant colony comprising more than 25 breeding pairs. Nesting alongside them are Western Jackdaw, Spotless Starling and Eurasian Tree Sparrow, as well as Eurasian hoopoes and European Rollers. In March, the lesser kestrels return to the colony and compete for nesting sites with Western Jackdaw and Spotless Starlin. The first mating displays are observed. April marks the peak of mating and courtship behaviour. Most egg-laying takes place in May. First-year non-breeding individuals and birds from other nearby colonies are recorded. In the second half of June, the first chicks appear on the roof, venturing out of the nest to receive food. By late June or early July, the first young of the year take flight. The colony is abandoned between the last week of July and the first few days of August.
