The hide is raised about 2 metres off the ground, bringing it level with the perches, on the edge of a small seasonal pond known as La Lagunita, surrounded by tamarisk trees that provide a green backdrop for photographs. It features a raised platform that recreates different settings for photographing the roller birds. Probably because of the secluded location of this hide, tucked away in a very quiet corner of the estate, this pair tends to spend the most time on the perches around the nest during the day. This results in very productive photo sessions. They also tend to remain in the vicinity of the nest until dusk, allowing for shots that are not usually easy or possible with the other pairs, as they retreat into the nest before sunset. The roller birds return to El Taray around mid-April, with the 20th being the date on which their stable presence in the vicinity of the nest is recorded on average. From that day until mid-May, mating takes place, often accompanied by a colourful courtship dance. The incubation period runs from mid-May to mid-June. During this time, the roller pairs regularly exchange food around the nest, and the non-incubating bird visits the perches in front of the hide from time to time. Visits increase significantly between mid-June and the first weeks of July as the chicks are being fed. The chicks’ departure from the nest is very sudden, and they are no longer photographed in the vicinity of the breeding site within hours of the last chick taking flight.
